  • Medicare RD providers may be able to participate in a new Medicare Part B incentive program called the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) will launch this summer.   View pdf of CMS PQRI module

The initiative establishes a financial incentive for eligible professionals to participate in a voluntary quality reporting program.  Eligible professionals who successfully report a designated set of quality measures on claims for dates of service from July 1 to December 31, 2007, may earn a bonus payment, subject to a cap, of 1.5% of total allowed charges for covered Medicare physician fee schedule services.
Details at CMS weblink.   An ADA sponsored teleconference is also planned on June 18, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Central time.  Go to ADA’s Web site www.eatright.org/mnt for teleconference details including pre-reading materials.

  • Do you have a National Provider Identifier (NPI)?  Health care providers are required by law to apply for a National Provider Identifier (NPI).  Apply online at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov or call (800) 465-3203 to request a paper application.

ADA's top reasons to apply for a NPI (MS Word)                    CMS overview of NPI enrollment (pdf)

NPI Registry now available!  The free, online database for National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers will replace the agency’s former Unique Physician Identification Number (UPIN) registry.  The database is needed for providers to determine the NPI numbers of other providers in order to submit claims transactions that are compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. The information will be available in downloadable files and in a query-only database from the agency’s Web page; go to www.cms.hhs.gov and search for NPI.

According to CMS, most of the data elements included in the application for an NPI will be disclosed. Those include name, address, phone number and fax. However, Social Security numbers, IRS individual taxpayer identification numbers, and dates of birth will not be released.  Providers will be able to update their NPPES information on an ongoing basis by calling the NPI Enumerator at 1-800-465-3203. According to CMS, updated downloadable files will be made available every month.
